Experts from a not-for-profit website Kids Health say swinging children by the arms could cause painful injuries.

Studies reveal that children aged one to four have less developed bones and ligaments so when they take part in activities such as being swung by the arms, they are more prone to getting nursemaids elbow also known as pulled elbow

What is nursemaid’s elbow?

Pulled elbow also known as nursemaid’s elbow, is the displacement of the elbow joint especially when one of the bones in the elbow moves out of place. Children within the ages of 1-4 are more prone to having their nursemaids as their bones and ligaments are not fully developed.

What’s the treatment?

A nurse can help out with the treatment process and can also put the bone back into place. Nursemaid’s elbow can cause temporary pain in the arm but does not necessarily mean it the pain will take a long term. Once the bone is put back in the correct place, the pain will disappear.

Orthopaedic surgeon from online health platform Doctor Amer Khan said, ‘Any particularly excessive sudden traction force to the upper limb may potentially cause injury to the joints in the upper limb’.

Adam Pandit, a consultant shoulder and elbow surgeon at Spire Thames Valley in Slough also had this to say about nursemaids

“You can’t wrap your children in cotton wool but you can take greater care when playing with them in a sort of ‘rough and tumble’ sort of way – be aware that all their joints are still forming so anything that puts extra pressure on them can have a detrimental effect.”
