Fibroids are abnormal growths that develop in or on a woman’s uterus and sometimes on the cervix. It is also known as leiomyomas or myomas. These growths are typically non-cancerous tumors (benign). It can be as small as a seed or as large as a grape fruit. A woman is more likely to get fibroids if she has never been pregnant or has a close relative with fibroids. The exact cause of fibroid is yet unknown and so is the total prevention of its growth in a woman’s body.

Factors that can increase a woman’s risk of developing fibroids include a family history of fibroids; women who are overweight (obesity); age (late reproductive years); having never been pregnant; eating habits (eating a lot of red meat).

Fibroids has been grouped based on where they grow which includes:

  • Submucosal fibroids grow into the uterine cavity.
  • Intramural fibroids grow within the wall of the uterus.
  • Sub-serosal fibroids grow on the outside of the uterus.

The symptoms of fibroids depends on how many they are as well as their location and sizes. A woman may have no symptoms if the tumor is very small, or if she is going through menopause. Fibroids may also shrink during and after menopause.

Symptoms of fibroids may include:

  • Heavy bleeding between or during your periods that includes passage of blood clots
  • Pain in the pelvis and/or lower back
  • Increased menstrual cramping
  • Increased urination
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Menstruation that lasts longer than usual
  • Pressure or fullness in your lower abdomen
  • Swelling or enlargement of the abdomen
  • Anemia
  • Infertility

Fibroids may not need treatment if they are small or do not produce symptoms. If you are pregnant and have fibroids, or become pregnant and have fibroids, your physician will carefully monitor your condition. There are always options for treating fibroids but surgery should be your last option for fibroids.
